HARRISBURG – Rep. Jim Marshall (R-Beaver/Butler) announced numerous local schools were awarded grants totaling more than $996,000 from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency. The grants are designed to improve school safety and security, as well as prevent violence in communities.

The 17-member committee within the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency was created as part of Act 44 of 2018, a comprehensive school safety law passed in 2018.

Grant recipients within the 14th District include:

• Beaver Area School District: $33,565 to fund cameras and threat assessment training.
• Beaver Valley Intermediate Unit: $140,454 to fully fund an employee identification printer, portable radios, first aid kits, a bag scanner and security cameras.
• Big Beaver Falls School District: $35,000 for a districtwide assessment, staff training and trauma-informed responses to teaching.
• Blackhawk School District: $40,000 for student counseling services.
• Freedom Area School District: $35,000 for staff training, security planning and purchase of security-related technology.
• Midland Borough School District: $30,000 for training and compensating school resource officers.
• New Brighton Area School District: $35,000 for training and compensating school resource officers. It will also be used for security planning and purchase of security-related technology.
• Riverside Beaver County School District: $357,750 to fund a phone system, training, visitor management kiosks, emergency kits, a vestibule and gate.
• Rochester Area School District: $30,000 for training and compensating school resource officers. It will also be used for security planning and purchase of security-related technology.
• Seneca Valley School District: $181,000 for security assessments, purchase of security-related technology, student counseling and staff training.
• South Side Area School District: $48,344 to fully fund trauma kits, response kits and active shooter training.
• Western Beaver County School District: $30,000 for student counseling, as well as training and compensating school resource officers.

“This funding will help to better protect our students and their teachers from many possible safety threats. By putting this grant money to use, we’re better able to put processes and equipment in place that will both discourage and minimize threats,” Marshall said.
